A "Knock" To Remember Ended in Success!

I would like to apologize for the very late post after A "Knock" To Remember.

Its been two weeks or more since we had our finale in The Apartment Downtown, KLCC. We, The Knockers are very much pleased with the outcome of our series of events as it eventually lead us reach our targeted objective, raising Rm 10, 000 for Shelter: Home For Children.

Our finale, A "Knock" To Remember was a memorable night as we had up to almost 200 participants, dressed up in formal attire and attended the cocktail styled party. From Taylors College Petaling Jaya, our project advisor, Mr Sri Kumar and lecturer Mr Phua Yeong Tsann attended the finale as well. Shelter Home sent five representative to attend the event, they are Mr James Nayagam, Ms Elaine Wong, Mr Anderson, Mr Evan, and Mr Antony Arul. The mebers of the media that attended our event includes, Time Out KL, Star R.A.G.E, Remaja Tv3, Joyce Wong or better known as Kinky Blue Fairy, and also Shaz from Xfresh.

On that night, the guest starts to fill up the place from 7pm onwards. By 8pm, The Apartment Downtown, KLCC was rather filled up already. Our MC for the night, Roshan from Mix Fm started the event. As promised, Taylors College very own duo, Diche & Ashleigh performed a acoustic song to begin the night. Followed by Project Knock's project manager's speech. After that, Shelter Home's Mr. Andreson and executive director of Shelter, Mr James Nayagam gave their share of speech. Our launch gambit then begins, using a mock cheque as sign that we achieved our obejective.

A audio visual is then shown to the guest. The slide show consist of the series of events organized by the Knockers and also the effort put in to raise awareness for Shelter Home. Moving on, it was performance by the Snow Symphony. Singer/Guitarist Nick Davis requested the audience to particiapate in his performance by singing along, which they did! It felt like a rock concert for a while there.

9.00pm, our first lucky draw begins. Followed by an auction session. The auction items were pictures drawn by kids from Shelter Home. Karen Belarek then hits the stage and performed her very own song! Her angelic voice brought everyone on cloud nine. Moving on it was a funky musical performance by Russel Curtis. Another lucky draw and auction session then begun.

By 9.30pm, most of the guest were done with dinner. They then witnessed a highly energetic performance by a dance team, The Mustang Crew. Their dance moves leaves everyone speechless and motionless as it was smooth and unpredictable. They were then asked to stay on stage to play dancing game with the audience. A few guest were invited on stage to participate, among them are project manager, Pradeep Chandrasekaran and project advisor, Mr Sri Kumar. Their outgoing and interesting dance moves cracked everyone up, sounds of laughter were heard everywhere.

The last two performance were by Vinodh Menon who a performed a cover of Elton John's Your Song and one of his band's (Mystery Of The Glass) original song. Ray Cheong and Ash then ended the night with 3 of their original tracks. Ray and Ash were nicknamed by our MC, Roshan.. The AshRay.

Approximately 11pm, the guest starts to leave. The Knockers hugged each other and shed a few tears of joy. The knocking night then comes to an end.

A 'Knock' To Remember is a cocktail themed party. Tickets are priced at RM 60 . All proceeds from ticket sales goes to the charity organization that we are working with, Shelter Home for Children. So come land us a helping hand in providing a better future for under privileged children.

We will be have loads of fun and entertainment lined up for the nights' agenda. We have performances by local aspiring artists such as Ray Cheong , Nick Davis and Russell Curtis; just to name a few. There will also be a special presentation by the Mustang Crew. There will also be several lucky draws going on throughout the event. Guests stand a chance to win some exciting and one of a kind prizes. Auctions of artwork done by the children of Shelter.

Diche and Ashleigh
Taylors College Pj's own duo, Diche and Ashleigh will be performing a cover of Michael Buble's "Everything". What makes it so special, is that Diche is a Knocker herself! Accompanying her on acoustic guitar is Ashleigh.
The Snow Symphony
The Snow Symphony is a duo formed by singer-songwriter Nick Davis and violinist Savy Ho. Their collaboration began early April this year. Their songs consist of hard guitar strumming and melancholic violin lines. They are now in the early stages of recording; due to be released at the end of 2008.

Karen Belarek
Karen has always been into music for as long as she can remember. She comes from a big family that are music enthusiasts and would have to constantly fight for the mic. Her interest for performing has built up over the years; overcoming stage fright. Her genres are indie and soul, and she adores Jason Mraz and his music. Her parents, family, boyfriend, and friends are her inspiration because 'everyone has a story'.

Russell Curtis
Russell Curtis plays funk, soul, and old school R&B. He currently has 3 singles out and is still working on a full album. He created the Russell Curtis Concept which is basically performances that include impromtu jamming. You can catch him and his band at Ali Yaa in Damansara every Friday and Saturday, from 10pm onwards.

Mustang Crew
Musang Crew is a well known dance crew is the local college dance circuit. For those of you who don't know, they came in first place at Dance Quake '08, another Taylors College project. They incorporate animation and skits into their dance routines.

Vinodh Menon
Vinodh Menon is the lead singer of rock band, Mystery Of The Glass. Playing alongside with him are his band's guitarists; also Knockers, Nick and Pradeep. He will be performing a cover song and also Mystery Of The Glass' original song, entitled "Things Will Be Ok".

Ray Cheong and Ash
Ray and Ash play a fusion of various styles; funk, blues, rock, and folk music. One of their main influence is John Mayer. To them, John Mayer is one of the most respectable musician of this generation and the maturity and talent that he exudes really inspires them. If there ever came a time where they could be an opening act for a musician, it would have to be John Mayer. They would rather not join any competitions because their music is their passion. It's not about competing with others. They just love entertaining their audience even in their own living room!

All the performers were kind enough to take time off from their work and daily life to come perform at our charity event.

Their charitable efforts are very much appreciated by the KNOCKERs!

Shuffle the cards and each take one without looking, then one the count of 3, they reveal their card. The two with the same colored card has to shout the opponent's "new name" that they've exchanged earlier. The slowpoke gets kicked out of the game. The game goes on until the last one stands.

Update on Mini KO

Mini KO which was held at Taylors College Petaling Jaya, Leisure Commerce Square, Courtyard on the 24th of September, was a fun filled event which ended with the Knockers raising a total amount of RM1119.45!! We are now a step closer to reaching our targeted amount, it was a real motivation to the Knockers.

The event was held side by side with the Ugly For Beauty campaign, which organized a dance competition and invited the FLY. fm Troopers to further the entertainment and excitement!

We are proud to present to you, Mini KO!

What can you expect at Mini KO?

Food & Drinks : Tasty & irresistible food by Fusion Haven, the restaurant that practices art of combining taste from all over, serves varieties of exotic fusion food which is a combination of Japanese, Korean, Italian, Western and Chinese. A real treat for yourselves as lunch. We will also be selling our very own KNOCKA COLA! Its a soda, similar to Coca-Cola.

Games : A pair of steady hands will be needed for our Knock Wriggler! This is the game where you need to hold a metal pole and navigate it through a metal obstacle, once the pole contacts with the metal obstacle, a alarm will be activated! Also, we will have another game we call, Spiral Penetration. In this game, a string with a pen attached to one end will be tied to the participants waist, the participant will then be instructed to put one hand on the floor and turn rounds until dizzy-ness kicks in, then, he/she will need to walk a straight line which at the end a bottle awaits. The last move is to maneuver the pen into the bottle!

Participants can reserve sits for our future event too, Charity Gala Dinner. Fund Raising Events from Project Knock

As you may already know by now, Project Knock's main objective is to raise fund for Shelter.
We, The Knockers, has planned two events to gather the estimated fund, RM10, 000, from the public for Shelter.

1. K.O
K.O was planned as a game/food sales event. Light food such as cupcakes, cakes, candies, chocolates, and many others are expected to be sold at reasonable rates. As for games, we have prepared several fun/exciting/creepy/dizzy games, be there to find out what are they!
We guarantee you a good time :)

2.Charity Gala Dinner
The Charity Gala Dinner is Project Knock's main fund raising event, profit from ticket sales will be contributed to Shelter, and donation will be welcome during the dinner. Several performances by local celebrities are to be expected on that very night. The gala dinner will also be Project Knock's official launch.

Project Knock Hit The Streets

On September 15th, 2008, The Knockers went on road with Project Knock's personalized vehicles, known as "The Knock Cruisers". The objective was to educate the public concerning the project's objective and the existence of Shelter.

The journey started from Taylors College Petaling Jaya, and a total of 3 "Knock Cruisers" convoyed their way to Sunway (next to Sunway Pyramid), made a quick stop, and then proceeded to Subang SS15. We finally parked the Cruisers along the road next to Taylors College Main Campus, and went on foot to approach the public. Flyers and Shelter's pamphlets were given out, passer-bys were educated about the purpose of our project and also invited to join us at out fund raising events. The Knockers also drew attention of the public by shouting the "Knockers Chant" out loud, many passerby were intrigued and curious what we were doing, and approached us to find out. Besides that, The Knockers tapped on passing vehicles window to hand them flyers and phamphlets (the traffic was slow moving, thus, it was safe and we did not create any traffic jams).

The trip was ended due to bad weather, it started to drizzle and then rained at approximately 6.30pm. The "Knock Cruisers" left and returned to Taylors College Petaling Jaya.

Background

Project KNOCK: Empowering Urban Youth is a project organized by the KNOCKers, aimed to giving aid to one of the shelter homes founded by Shelter Home. Our project advocates awareness and understanding of the state these youths are in.

We aim to heighten awareness amongst other college students and young working adults regarding these youths and at the same time, raise enough funds to purchase better books and other equipments needed for these youths.

Introduction

Shelter is a registered welfare organization that was set up in June 1981. Guided by the vision of giving children at risk of not having a childhood, a future by protecting, guiding and healing them and by building strong communities and loving families, Shelter’s services and initiatives are aimed at:

Providing care for abused, abandoned, neglected or at-risk children through our residential homes, counseling, therapy and other services.

Most of the children and youth that are in their care come from dysfunctional families, and have suffered abuse, neglect and family conflicts. Shelter believes that love, support and guidance are essential to healing hearts and minds. By providing a stable, safe and caring home-like environment, Shelter will be able to help the children and youth to regain their self-worth and trust in humanity.

Beginning with one home for five abandoned children in 1981, Shelter Homes now operates four homes for children and teenagers from 4 to 18 years of age:
Shelter 1: Home for children (age 4-12)
Shelter 2: Home for teenage girls (age 13-18)
Shelter 3: Home for teenage boys (age 13-18)
Shelter 4: Home for non-schooling teenage girls (age 13-18)

Some of the other services provided by Shelter:
Family Services

Practical help, guidance, and counseling to families experiencing difficulties in child behavior, teenage problems or family conflict.
Training for individuals who come into contact with abused children, and parenting skill courses.

Community Services

Tuition classes, medical clinics, and awareness programmes to help children in underpriviledged communities, through community centres.
Emergency financial and food aid for families in difficulties, including victims of unfortunate circumstances and disasters.
DropZone (offering music, refreshments, tuitions, etc) where youths can ‘hang-out’ in a safe environment
Prison educational development work in Kajang Prison
Aid and support for refugee children
